It’s time to put our fingers into the wind and see what planetary weather is like for February. We start the month with slow-moving Neptune entering Pisces on February 3rd, where it will remain until 2026. Neptune, aka Poseidon in the Greek myths, rules oceans, so I expect we’ll hear a lot about our waters — water rights, rising sea levels, water-related natural disasters — over the next fourteen years. Given that a common epithet for Neptune was “Earth-Shaker” — a strike of his trident could create a spring as well as drown a ship — earthquakes may be on the rise as well.

Pisces, the fish, is also connected to unfathomable deeps, underscoring this watery theme. It speaks to dissolving boundaries, metaphorical or literal; an innate awareness of wholeness and interconnectedness; and compassion, in particular a desire to help those it feels are disempowered. The Spiritualist Movement began during the last pass of Neptune through Pisces in the mid-19th Century, and we should again see renewed explorations into consciousness and its boundaries, with a strong spiritual leaning, during this new transit. Other boundary-dissolving movements and revelations which appeared during Neptune’s last trek through Pisces include Darwin’s On the Origins of Species (unifying the life sciences through the theory of evolution), the suffragist and abolitionist movements (offering equality and empowerment for the oppressed), and the Communist Manifesto (announcing Marx’s dream of a classless society).

February 7th brings a full moon across the signs of Leo and Aquarius, asking us weigh our needs as an individual against those of our community to determine if we have the right balance. Is our subjective world (what makes me happy, where do I find my joy) aligned with our objective world (what is equitable, where do I contribute)? Have you become such a good citizen that you’ve stifled the creative, playful child in you, or have you been so immersed in what you want that you’ve neglected the world around you? Use the illumination of the full moon to reveal disparities between your desires and your obligations.

The full moon falls directly between the planets of Venus and Pluto, in a powerful midpoint configuration, demanding we pay attention to our relationships this month, including those to money and values. Fixed and rigid positions are set for reevaluation. If we haven’t been managing these areas of our life well, the following week may shake things up so that we see any discontinuities clearly.

The theme of the full moon continues the next day, February 8th, when Saturn stations in Libra and Venus moves into Aries. Saturn, planetary statesman of tradition and duty, desires responsibility and integrity, and Libra seeks fairness, especially in one-on-one relationships. As Saturn turns retrograde – seeming to stop and turn direction in the sky – he asks that we slow down, take stock, and restructure our relationships to bring them into balance.

Conversely, Venus, goddess of love and pleasure, moving into self-reliant, independent Aries on the same day, speaks to honoring ourselves. Between February 8th and February 15th Venus makes tense aspects with Uranus (February 10th) and Pluto (February 15th). If handled skillfully, we are presented an opportunity to unfetter ourselves from false burdens. However, acting impulsively or without integrity may lead to sudden upsets or power struggles, financial setbacks, even a damaged a relationship. Remember to proceed with caution this week and to mediate your needs and those of others fairly. A childlike insistence on your own way will only backfire, but so will acquiescing solely out of a sense of obligation.

February 21st brings a new moon in expansive Pisces and a lessening of tensions. The new moon, tied closely to Neptune and Chiron this month, calls us to tap into our healing dreams and expand our possibilities. Are you at the end of the tether in some area of our life? Are you limiting yourself from going after what you want because of an old wound? This is the moon cycle for applying healing balm and also for entertaining visions of what could be.

A good place to start is to ask a few key questions:

If reality were limitless, where would I be, what would I be doing, and what shape would my life take?

Do I feel deserving of my dreams? What healing do I need?

What self-imposed limits do I need to expand beyond?

Conjure the ocean of your dreams and splash in the waves. Allow yourself the luxury of being a dreamy, inspired, poetic visionary during this moon, remembering that every great triumph began as a wispy vision and someone daring to believe.

But don’t just sit there. Develop a strategy. Supportive aspects from Saturn and Jupiter this new moon provide an opportunity to start managing the process. Envision your future; then map it out so the process feels controllable. Jupiter gives us the enthusiasm and vision to see ahead, but Saturn gives us the discipline and practical know-how to make that vision a reality.

To underscore this message, this month Mars remains retrograde in Virgo, which also speaks to the need for practical action. Taking a moment to review recent steps and refine plans can help prepare for the hard work of moving forward.

One note: with Mars in stressful relationship to Mercury in Pisces at the new moon, we must eventually ensure that our ideas are realistic. Mars sharpens whatever it touches, cutting away excess, so our minds (Mercury) and others’ minds may develop a critical edge. Those plans and ideas which can’t hold water may be challenged by other people – not so you throw up your hands and walk away, but to help you refine your vision and correct potential problems.

So dream large, my friend. Put no limits on your imagination. Once you have your vision firmly in your mind’s eye—but not before—you can give it proper shape. This moon calls for both limitless imagination and the further definition of dreams.

If you know the sign rising at the time of your birth (also known as the rising sign), read that sign as well as your birth sign, otherwise read your sun sign. If you don’t know your rising sign and would like to find out, click here for instructions.

A broad, monthly horoscope is no substitution for a consultation using your exact birth time. Consult my services page for more information or call me at 800.604.0299.

Aries: Put on your party dress on and circulate through the first half of the month. There’s fun to be had and an opportunity to meet new (and old) friends, so isolating at home won’t do. Work continues to be demanding this month, but you like a challenge. It’s all the more reason for you to go blow off some steam when the opportunity arises. Gemstone: Yellow Jasper

Taurus: You may find yourself out of sorts this month as Venus heads into Aries. Sticking close to the house helps, as does working through prickly feelings which may be bristling underneath the surface, especially with those near and dear. By the end of the month, seek out friends and share your heart’s desires. You’ll find a supportive audience. Gemstone: Ocean Jasper

Gemini: The first half of the month is a good period to ask yourself whether you’re walking your talk. If your values aren’t reflected in your day-to-day environment, look for ways to bring them in. Friends can be stimulating or disruptive right now. Paying attention to which of the two categories fit – especially at midmonth – may be revealing. Gemstone: Sodalite

Cancer: You’ve been holding your cards close to your chest of late and – so it continues, especially during the first part of the month. Use the time through the 7th to look at your finances and fiscal plans. Work relationships may be tense the second half of the month. You’ll do well to focus on your big-picture values and what really matters, avoiding any drama. Gemstone: Orange Calcite

Leo: The fulcrum between yours and other’s needs may be difficult to keep balanced this month, with demands from others running high. Call on your well-known generosity of spirit and vitality to pull you through. Use the latter part of the month to pull back a bit and revisit your finances. Ensure they’ll meet your needs going forward, no matter how large you dream. Gemstone: Prehnite

Virgo: With Mars moving through your sign, you’re busier than normal and feeling the pressure. Good health routines – enough sleep, downtime, nutritious food, exercise – do much to ease any tension. Midmonth you may find yourself feeling touchy. Take a deep breath: cut wood, carry water. Feeling put upon will only increase the stress and dull your effectiveness. Gemstone: Red Jasper

Libra: With Saturn stationing in the last degree of your sign, you may feel like Sisyphus this month. You’re almost done pushing that boulder, but not quite ready to face the altered reality of finally getting it up the hill for good. Do something fun early in the month; by the second week there’s work to do. If tempers fly or people become erratic, draw upon your graciousness and tact to reel them in. Gemstone: Selenite

Scorpio: Ideally, what you do in the world aligns with who you are at core. This month evaluate if your current direction reflects your essential self. Reorient yourself if necessary and shore up your foundation to support your growing sense of new direction. Coworkers can be a source of frustration right now, so lean on friends to help keep perspective. Gemstone: Apophylite

Sagittarius: Your mind tends to be overactive right now, but unless you hitch your ideas to your fundamental values and motivations you’re likely to spin in place. Better yet, quiet your mind by with the simple remedy of taking care of what’s in front of you, especially on the job. When you need sanctuary, nights at home provide respite. Gemstone: Howlite

Capricorn: Early in the month you may want to calibrate your finances to bring them under control. Come the new moon, though, it’s time to connect with others. Circulate. You need to share your ideas and do a bit of intellectual cross-pollination. Sitting at home may make you feel stir crazy. Gemstone: Azurite

Aquarius: The ball is in your court, Aquarius, so state your position at the start of the month and let yourself be heard. Midmonth, take care that fuzzy math or inattention doesn’t turn costly. In fact, pragmatic strategies to tackle debt and unfetter yourself should pay off beautifully through June. If, after the first couple of weeks, communications begin to misfire, seek common ground. Gemstone: Blue Aventurine

Pisces: You may find you have more influence operating behind the scenes in the first half of the month. It’s a good time to evaluative your health and work routines to ensure they genuinely support your wellbeing. Come the new moon, bring the focus to your desires for yourself and the world, and to what work needs to be done in your one-on-one relationships. Gemstone: Chalcopyrite

What Evolution Can’t Tell Us About Women’s Sex and Work
Millhopper Library Branch, 3145 NW 43 Street
February 8th, 7pm

On February 8th, in the Millhopper Branch Library, Carla Fehr will draw on research in psychology to discuss how popular arguments that paint women as “coy, nurturing and passive” lead to and justify male domination in certain high-powered professions. Fehr will break with these popular accounts by explaining how improving workplace diversity leads to improved decision-making. Time for questions and discussion follows.
Ustler Hall (old women’s gym), University of Florida
February 9th, 7:30pm

On February 9th, at the University of Florida, Carla Fehr will speak specifically about the role of women in academic science and engineering research. In this lecture, Carla Fehr will discuss her research showing that diverse scientific communities produce more rigorous results than homogeneous communities because they explore more paths of explanation. Consequently, the underrepresentation of women in scientific professions has a negative impact on research outcomes. A Q&A follows.

About Carla Fehr

Carla Fehr is the Wolfe Chair in Science and Technology Studies at the University of Waterloo, where she conducts research on the social structure of scientific communities. She is a co-Principal Investigator for ISU ADVANCE, a $3.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to study workplace equity and conduct diversity training to promote the advancement and retention of women and minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Prof. Fehr has published in numerous journals and edited books, and holds two awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching.

The following updates are from Becky & Idania of Rock ‘n Glass:

Day 6 is all about packing! And this is where we question our sanity. The lifting, taping while bent over packing boxes, twisting around while carrying 30-40lbs packages, stacking finished cases and all the while keeping track of each container’s content is a challenge; thank goodness for our partnership! When one of us is ready to give in and quit, the other one cracks a joke, calls a break or hands over a cold drink.

The sun rises on our final day in Tucson. We are done! Shipping boxes have been taken to the freight company for delivery in about a week. Hallelujah! We celebrate by a marvelous early dinner at Mama Louisa’s Italian Restaurant, a Tucson establishment for over 50 years.

So that’s exactly what Friends of Wild Iris decided to do… Starting in January 2012, we’ll create a intimate, thought provoking, knowledge increasing, safe space for people to discuss these books and analyze what they mean for our lives and what lessons we can take with us from these pioneers in feminist literature.

Meetings will be held the Third Tuesday of every month from 7-8pm at Wild Iris Books.

Some of us will gather before the meeting from 6-7pm so that we can grab dinner and drinks from Cafe Colette – and we invite you to join us for good eats to fuel our minds for discussion time…

This reading group is free and open to anybody who is interested…

After a slow start, Day 5 is dedicated to finalizing our purchases as we prepare to pack the shipment. We procured SANDSTONE sculptures, spheres and BOOKENDS from the Four Points area. Idania is obsessed with black tourmaline. We found a very nice, affordable variety from India. Having fallen in love with a double-terminated sample from China, we are scouring Tucson for material we can bring home. Fortunately, other treasures were found during this hunt:

1) Tumbled KINGMAN TURQUOISE nuggets from the mine in northern Arizona.

2) Beautiful split ammonite pairs & ammonite pendants with iridescent outer shell from Morocco.

3) Amazing RAINBOW QUARTZ from India. These were discovered about three years ago and have a wonderful, energizing vibration.

4) YONIS, marble holders for Shiva lingams or spheres, in various sizes.

Eureka! Almost having lost hope, we negotiated a good price for the black tourmaline from China. We had to purchase an entire case in order to get that rate, but we are happy with its value. Each crystal is double-terminated and range in size from one to four inches.

The following updates are from Becky & Idania of Rock ‘n Glass:

Today our focus is on finding that new or unusual item(s). Immediately we contacted a Canadian miner selling ‘Fairy Stones,’ silicated concretions. These extraordinary forms are believed to have formed from the remains of bacterial colonies in calcium carbonate-rich cold, swampy waters as concentric circles around plant filaments. Each shows patterns of growth interrupted by dry or colder periods. The impression of horsehair and algae filaments can be seen on the underside of each piece.

We next met with our friend from the Congo, selling malachite specimens and products. It is sad how warfare and political conflict has devastated this country’s economy. Malachite prices have sky-rocketed as global supplies have dwindled; very little new material is leaving Congo.

At the same show where yesterday we found fossilized marble products, Becky met an artist from the Navajo nation, Two Feathers. The vibrant colors, geometric patterns and intricate symbolism connect the viewer with Life in this region of the United States. His works will soon hang in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.

Happy with our personal purchases, we traveled across town to another tent show. This one, however, is a tent town/city. An international food court sits in the center of a grid composed of small (10’ x 10’) to huge (circus-sized) tents. Here we met another seller from the Congo. On the second day of this show, eight of ten 8-foot tables sit empty. Most of his malachite has been sold and he must pay for another 2 weeks of rental space. He quietly sits with his remaining merchandise, knowing the monies lost simply because he cannot restock. He has no more stock in storage from which to draw and may not be here next year. His dignity is impressive and leaves an indelible image in my mind’s eye.

We continue through the show and came across a rare form of obsidian from Russia. This translucent material resulted from the solidification of liquids and has inclusions of black ‘lamellae’ or lines running through it. Aptly named ‘Midnight Lace Obsidian,’ its secret beauty is revealed when viewed in the sunlight. We leave with HEARTS, SOAPS and SLABS to show.

After our treks, we enjoyed a simple meal at the Dennys on Valencia Avenue, by far the best franchise in this national chain. The wait staff and those in the kitchen really care about their duties; and it shows in the service and food. The veggie burgers were well-cooked and served on fresh toasted buns, the fries were hot and crispy, and the apple-caramel crisp with ice cream was a fabulous end to our meal.

A few photos of the day follow:

The following updates are from Becky & Idania of Rock ‘n Glass:

After a hearty breakfast, the third day began with a search for purpurite, copper and specular hematite. Though we found new COPPER SPHERES, the dealer has sold out of the others. As buyer after buyer heard the news, there was a shift in the energy/intention – the “frenzy” had begun. Similar to crowds looking for Black Friday bargains, as supplies dry-up people become less polite, more selfish in their search for material to take home. Rather than join in, we wandered through other shops. After purchasing tumbled peanutwod, Becky spotted beautiful SMOKEY QUARTZ from Mooralla, Victoria, Australia. Often double-terminated, these crystals are known for their inclusions and enhydros.

While driving to the aforementioned new show (see Day 2), we spotted a banner for a small show on a side street. Here dealers were still setting up as the doors opened for business. We lucked into specimen-quality ZIRCON, TANZANITE, and TOURMALINE. Down the hall, we noticed the miner from China we had met last year. Her “singing” quartz lasers and mini quartz points joined our bounty.

After finding the downtown locale, we strolled the aisles of this mammoth tent show. Wares from all over the world are on display. After buying LAPIS LAZULI SPHERES from Afghanistan, we encountered beautifully crafted sculptures in petrified fossils. We could not leave without BOOKENDS, PYRAMIDS, and small BOXES.

Crossing the freeway, we meandered through “The Strip”; site from which the current shows grew. Herkimer diamonds from New York, quartz obelisks from Brazil, FLUORITE HEARTS AND PYRAMIDS from China were added to our stash. Happily re-acquainted with a mining family from Mexico, we purchased obsidian products. We learned that the original spiderweb obsidian mine had played out and no new pocket has been found in more than 3 years. Hearing this news, we purchased as much of this material as we could in spheres, tumbled stones and freeforms. Silver sheen and gold sheen obsidian spheres and tumbled stones rounded out this deal.

Though exhausted, we enjoyed a wonderful meal at The Kingfisher. Though reservations are highly recommended, we were immediately seated in the lounge. From cocktails to dessert, we were treated to delicious foods and outstanding service. The nattily attired patrons must have wondered about the two happy, yet grungy women in the corner booth!

Hope you enjoy the following photos of this day…

January 28 marks the annual observance of Data Privacy Day. First held in 2007 by the Council of Europe as “Data Protection Day,” the event has grown into a international observance that seeks to provide information about personal data rights and protections to consumers of all ages. The United States officially joined in the observance of Data Privacy Day in 2009 when the U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution HR 31, declaring January 28 National Data Privacy Day.

This year, Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill commemorated Data Privacy Day with an online talk discussing the importance of securing online personal data and Senator Patrick Leahy issued a statement praising Congressional efforts to protect individuals’ privacy in the online environment.

Data Privacy Day has a host of educational, government, and consumer resources for those who want to learn more about privacy or observe Data Privacy Day in their own institutions.

For our own observance of Data Privacy Day, we’d like to once more draw attention to Bruce Schneier‘s excellent essay on The Eternal Value of Privacy, which offers this concise summary of the problem with unfettered data collection and surveillance:

For if we are observed in all matters, we are constantly under threat of correction, judgment, criticism, even plagiarism of our own uniqueness. We become children, fettered under watchful eyes, constantly fearful that — either now or in the uncertain future — patterns we leave behind will be brought back to implicate us, by whatever authority has now become focused upon our once-private and innocent acts. We lose our individuality, because everything we do is observable and recordable.

The following updates are from Becky & Idania of Rock ‘n Glass:

Our second day began with a quick purchase of calcite, obsidian spheres and peacock ore fromMexico. We were lucky to find the last 2 cases of newly-discovered cache of WHITE CALCITE. The violence and unrest in Chihuahua has greatly diminished the availability of Mexican stones as miners will not venture into the mountains.

As our purchases were packaged, we met with Todd from Utah. New YELLOW ARAGONITE spires, Moqui balls, trilobites and septarian slabs are returning with us. His display of Tiffany Stone is truly breath- taking.

Tiffany Stone

After picking up our purchases, we headed across town. Inexplicably Russian and Eastern Europe minerals have doubled in price from previous years. Charoite was no longer available; however, moldavite, seraphinite and new SHUNGITE PYRAMIDS were purchased. Though we continue to scour Tucson, black tourmaline is not readily seen; prices have doubled-quadrupled from last year. From China, we did find lovely long rods of STIBNITE.

Our next stop was the tents of Morocco for new WHITE SELENITE MASSAGE WANDS and TOWERS, and white and orange selenite hearts. Our day was to end with the purchase of beautifully crafted SEPTARIAN EGGS from Madagascar. However, as we waited to complete this sale, Becky found lovely GEMSTONE NECKLACES and silver-plated chakra jewelry from India to round out the day. The quality of the workmanship and designs was such that we could not leave without them. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Garland restaurant and headed back to our lodgings. We keep hearing of a new show, close to the downtown area, which we will check-out tomorrow. Here are a few photos of the day’s adventures.

This is the second of a series of posts celebrating Data Privacy Day 2012 , an international celebration designed to promote awareness about the many ways personal information is collected, stored, used, and shared, and to promote education about privacy practices that will enable individuals to protect their personal information.
