SunshineSunshine by Robin McKinley

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’m only loosely “shelving” this in horror; it was really more… humor? Fantasy? Mystery? Maybe I need a shelf just marked “fun to read.” For that’s what this book was; fun.

It was written in a humorous voice, but not a slapstick comedy type of voice — more of a snarky humor way. I enjoyed the way it was written (even though I’ve seen that others who reviewed this book did not), and I liked the main characters. The side characters were all quirky and layered enough to keep my interest, and I liked the oddness of the universe. Like I said, it was funny without resorting to the slapstick kind of humor that I just don’t grok.

This was pretty light reading; not juvenile but fast-paced. It’s not the darkest vampire book I’ve ever read, but it’s not full of sparkly teen-angst either. I was so enchanted with the set-up of the universe that I’d love to see other books set in this same area.
